After graduating from Cairo University, Karim Youssef worked for two years as a freelance print journalist; but after the 25 January revolution in 2011, he changed paths to become a freelance photographer and videographer. He lives and works in Cairo.\r

Karim's proposal looks at shawarma, hummus, falafel – all familiar smells and tastes of a Syria now engulfed in conflict. Hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees have fled to Egypt over the last two years. They face daily struggles in Egypt’s crowded and chaotic capital city, from finding stable income in a country where unemployment rates have skyrocketed since the ousting of Hosni Mubarak, to finding a decent meal. While Syria is renowned for having some of the best food in the Middle East, Egypt is notorious for having the worst.
