Though Macabre was one of the first bands to ever experiment with the themes and songwriting that would eventually become widely known as death metal, the group remained primarily an underground band. In the early '90s they garnered considerable acclaim from the death metal community for their Sinister Slaughter album, and in 2000 they sparked interest with a concept album based on Jeffrey Dahmer.
