
Vashti Was Right (The Book of Zeresh - a Purim Spiel)
Three years ago, that’s what we thought. But our synagogue had been buying Purimspiels for some time, and we were getting a little tired of them – Broadway parodies, Motown parodies, Beatles parodies … we thought, why doesn’t someone write some original songs just for Purim?
Why not take all those styles and put them together in one show – a sort of “Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” for Esther?
So we went to work on it. We gave all the main characters singing parts – Esther, Mordechai, Achashverosh, Haman, Vashti – and we gave singing parts to minor characters too, to give more people a chance to perform.
That means Zeresh (Haman’s wife), Bigthan and Teresh (the King’s eunuchs), and the women who compete to be queen all get their numbers too. And there’s a women’s swing quartet to recap the action, and plenty of singing for the chorus.
